Hurricane Season Update: How Seven Corners Can Help Your Clients

If your clients are planning on traveling during hurricane season, there are steps they can take for extra precautions.

Hurricane season (which began on June 1st) is still in effect until November 30th which means other storms could develop in the coming months. By now you have likely seen the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria.

The following types of benefits – depending on which plan your clients purchase – can help protect your clients trips from the uncertainties of hurricane season. It is important to note that benefits and triggers vary by policy, so be sure your client checks their plan document or calls us if they’re not certain about their coverage.

For Trip Protection Plans
The examples shown below apply to our RoundTrip Elite plan:

Cancellations due to weather: The Trip Cancellation benefit covers your clients' non-refundable, prepaid, trip costs if they are unable to take their trip due to a covered reason. Please remember that once a storm is named, they cannot buy travel insurance to protect them from it. For up-to-date information on if a storm is named or not, your clients should check with us. Carriers vary in the day and time they consider a storm named.
For RoundTrip Elilte, there is a specific trigger for weather that states you may cancel for Inclement Weather that causes complete cessation of services for at least 48 consecutive hours of the Common Carrier on which You are scheduled to travel.

Cancel For Any Reason:  If your clients would like the option to cancel their trip for literally any reason at all, consider suggesting the optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) benefit. It will increase the price of their coverage approximately 40% and will refund them for 75% of their nonrefundable prepaid trip costs provided they:

1.      Cancel their trip 2 days or more before their trip start date (scheduled departure date) and

2.      Buy insurance with CFAR coverage within 20 days of their initial trip deposit and

3.      Insure all nonrefundable prepaid trip costs (including the cost of subsequent travel arrangements added to their trip within 15 days of payment/deposit for each of these arrangements.

Please note that CFAR is not available in all states. Our purchase process will offer it to them as an option if it is available in their state.

Delays due to weather: The Trip Delay benefit pays for additional transportation, meals, accommodations and nonrefundable, unused prepaid expenses if your clients are delayed 6 or more hours en route to/from their trip. It protects them from a delay related to a documented weather condition which prevents them from getting to their point of departure.

Missed connections due to weather: This benefit pays additional transportation costs to join a cruise or tour if your clients miss their connection due to a delay of 3 or more hours due to a documented weather condition which prevents them from getting to the point of departure. This benefit also covers accommodations, meals, and non-refundable trip payments for the unused portion of the cruise or tour.

For Travel Medical Plans
Travel medical plans, such as Liaison Continent and Liaison Majestic, offer natural disaster benefits on top of medical protection for when your clients are traveling away from home.

Natural Disaster Accommodations: Seven Corners will pay a rate of $250/day for 5 days if your clients' principal lodging becomes uninhabitable due to a natural disaster at their destination.

Trip Interruption: If your clients cannot continue their trip due to serious damage to their principal residence caused by a hurricane or other natural disaster, Seven Corners will reimburse up to $5,000 (Liaison Continent) or $10,0000 (Liaison Majestic) for economy travel home.

Natural Disaster Evacuation: If a natural disaster makes your clients' destination outside of the United States uninhabitable, we will arrange and pay to evacuate them from a safe departure point to the nearest safe location. Along with this, we will arrange and pay for up to 3 days of lodging if they are delayed at the safe location. We will also arrange and pay for one-way economy airfare for return to their home country following an evacuation.

It is critical for your clients to read their plan document and purchase travel insurance prior to any named event. Since hurricanes are erratic and hard to predict, it is important to be aware of the risks of traveling during hurricane season in high-risk locations.
