My husband and I had been planning this trip for more than a year! We were so excited to see Alaska. Wednesday was our flight to Anchorage and the start of our adventure!
On Thursday, the fun began with a drive to Turnagain Arm. Turnagain Arm is just south of Anchorage, on the Seward Highway 1 and it hugs the dramatic shorelines. As we made our way we stopped at each scenic pull over. We saw a moose, a beautiful waterfall from the glaciers, beluga whales, and many doll sheep along the highway’s rocky cliffs. This stretch of highway is just spectacular!
Next, we stopped at Chugach State Park to see the Portage glaciers. We went into the visitor center and were told to hike to Byron Glacier and that you could walk on the snow once you got to the end of the hiking trail. The weather was great about 75 degrees (we were in shorts and sandals while walking in the snow!).
Thursday evening we had dinner at The Deck on Lake Hood which is at the float plan base! Literally float planes were landing and taking off right over our heads! It was really fun to watch.
Friday - we took a charter bus down to Seward to board our ship.
Saturday, we spent all day at sea and passed the Hubbard glaciers. There were an amazing amount of icebergs all around our cruise ship that day!
Sunday, we got into Juneau but the weather was really foggy and rainy so our dog sled adventure on top of Mendenhall glacier via helicopter tour got canceled. There was nothing we could do to change it so we decided to take the bus to Mendenhall glacier and walk to the waterfall.
Monday, we ported in Skagway - this was my favorite stop all week! The town is very quaint and we found a lovely local coffee shop and had breakfast with the locals early in the morning before all the tourists began to pile into the town. The sidewalks were all wooden plants and the town tried to keep the era of the Klondike gold rush days. Later that day, we took the most amazing zipline tour. It is called The Grizzly Falls Ziplining expedition. We took a fully customized Unimog monster machine that shuttled us to the top of the canopy and then we went on 11 ziplining stations that took us high in the canopy with views over glacially fed waterfalls and mountainous rainforests. It was just amazing!
Tuesday, we went to Icy Strait Point-which is a Celebrity cruise ship stop. We went on a back country Jeep excursion and saw a Momma bear and two cubs. It was a nice scenic drive. We also ate some really good smoked salmon.
Wednesday, we stopped at Ketchikan and went on a sea plane to view the Misty Fjords. It was a magical experience and the plane landed in a glacial lake.
Thursday we had a day at sea along the inside passage with the most beautiful scenery ever. Mile after mile of protected waterway. Alaska is a magnificent state and we can’t wait to plan our next trip!
