What You Need to Know about Hurricanes and Travel Insurance

If you are planning to travel anytime from June 1 through November 30, you should be aware it is hurricane season. We highly recommend you consider purchasing travel insurance to cover your travels during this time. 

NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is predicting an active 2019 Hurricane Season with an expected 15 named hurricanes. The peak months for hurricanes, between August and October, is now underway.

Meanwhile, if you have questions about how travel insurance can help you with weather emergencies, you’ve come to the right place.

Travel insurance includes benefits and coverage reasons specifically related to weather events, such as hurricanes, that can adversely affect travel.

There are two types of plans that include different benefits that can apply for weather emergencies such as a hurricane. These benefits can help protect you and your trip from the uncertainties of hurricane season. It is important to note that benefits and covered reasons vary by plan, so check your plan document or call us if you’re not certain about your coverage. 

Trip Protection Plan Benefits

For a trip protection plan such as RoundTrip Elite, benefits are available for cancellations due to weather if a covered reason in the plan document applies to your situation. 

Trip Cancellation Coverage

If you must cancel your trip, benefits can be paid to reimburse you for your unused and nonrefundable prepaid trip payments, including up to $75 for airline fees to rebank frequent flyer miles. 

Trip Interruption Coverage

If you must interrupt your trip, benefits can be paid to reimburse you for your unused and nonrefundable trip payments plus additional transportation costs for you to: 

  • Join your trip if you must depart after your scheduled departure date or travel via alternate travel arrangements (by the most direct route to reach your destination). 
  • Rejoin your trip or transport you to your originally scheduled return destination, if you must interrupt your trip after departure, each by the most direct route possible.    

Covered Reasons for Cancelling or Interrupting a Trip Due to Weather 

There are three covered reasons in RoundTrip Elite that provide coverage if you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to weather. They include: 

  1. Inclement weather (including a hurricane) causes complete cessation of your common carrier's services for at least 48 consecutive hours (including a hurricane). A common carrier is an airline or cruise line. 
    • For this covered reason to apply, you must buy RoundTrip Elite at least one day before your common carrier cancels their service.    
  2. You or your traveling companion's primary residence is rendered uninhabitable and remains uninhabitable during your scheduled trip due to fire, flood, burglary or other natural disaster (including a hurricane). Review the plan document for more details. 
    • For this covered reason to apply, you must buy RoundTrip Elite at least one day before your residence becomes uninhabitable, and you must buy the travel insurance one day before the storm becomes a named storm. This can be confusing, but think of it this way — you have to buy your auto insurance before you get in a wreck, or it's not covered.
  3. You or your traveling companion's place of employment is rendered unsuitable for business due to fire, flood, burglary or other natural disaster (including a hurricane), and you and/or your travel companion have to work as a result.
    • For this covered reason to apply, you must buy RoundTrip Elite one day before a flood or natural disaster renders your place of employment unsuitable for business.  

Cancel For Any Reason

If you would like the option to cancel your trip for literally any reason at all, consider purchasing the optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) benefit.

It will increase the price of your insurance plan approximately 40% and will reimburse you for up to 75% of your nonrefundable prepaid trip costs if you do the following:

  • Cancel your trip 2 days or more before your trip start date (scheduled departure date) and
  • Buy insurance with CFAR coverage within 20 days of your initial trip deposit (the first day you make a payment for our trip) and
  • Insure all nonrefundable prepaid trip expenses (you must also insure the cost of subsequent travel arrangements within 15 days of payment or deposit for them). An example of a subsequent travel arrangement could be adding an excursion to your cruise after you had previously paid for the cruise.

Please note CFAR is not available in all states. When you complete the quick quote in our purchase process, it will be presented to you as an option if it is available.

The trip delay benefit can pay for: 

  • The nonrefundable unused portion of your prepaid trip expenses (as long as they are not reimbursable by another source) and 
  • Accommodations, meals, and local transportation expenses you incur if you’re delayed six hours* or more en route to/from or during your trip.  

It protects you for two types of delay: 

  1.  A delay related to a documented weather condition that prevents you from getting to your point of departure. 
  2. Any delay of a common carrier (An example would be canceled service due to a hurricane.).
There are other coverage triggers as well for this benefit, so check the plan document for more details.

*This time limit varies by state and plan. Review your plan document for details. 

Missed Connection

This benefit can pay if you miss your cruise or tour departure because your arrival at your destination is delayed for 3 or more hours due to two covered reasons that could be related to weather. These include: 

  1. Any delay of a common carrier (airline, cruise line). 
  2. A documented weather condition that prevents you from getting to your point of departure.  

This benefit can pay for:

  • Additional transportation costs to join your trip and  
  • Accommodations, meals, and non-refundable trip payments for the unused portion of the cruise or tour. 

Travel Medical Benefits 

Travel medical plans, such as our Liaison Travel Series, offer natural disaster benefits on top of medical protection when you’re traveling away from home. For this type of plan, a natural disaster includes hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, tsunamis, cyclones, floods, and more (See the plan document for the full definition of natural disaster.)

Natural Disaster Accommodations

Our Liaison plans pay benefits if your principal lodging becomes uninhabitable due to a natural disaster at your destination. The benefit options include $50, $100, and $250 per day depending on which plan you select. The number of days for the benefit ranges from 5 to 10 days.  

Trip Interruption

If you cannot continue your trip due to serious damage to your principal residence caused by a hurricane or other natural disaster, our travel medical insurance plans will reimburse you either $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000 for economy travel home.

The dollar amounts vary by plan. You have three plan options for travel medical insurance. They include Liaison Economy, Liaison Choice, and Liaison Elite.

Natural Disaster Evacuation

If you require a natural disaster evacuation from a location outside of the United States, the plan can arrange and pay to evacuate you from a safe departure point to the nearest safe location. Along with this, we will arrange and pay for a specified number of days of lodging if you are delayed at the safe location.

We will also arrange and pay for one-way economy airfare to return you to your home country following an evacuation. Benefit amounts vary with plan options.  

It is important to read your plan document and buy your travel insurance before the natural disaster occurs. There is no coverage if the natural disaster situation causing the need for the benefits precedes your arrival at the affected location.

Since hurricanes are erratic and hard to predict, it's important to prepare ahead of time, especially if you are traveling during hurricane season, especially in high-risk locations.
