Around the World in 7 Dishes

Break out your sweaters and sip a pumpkin spice latte — fall has arrived. 

Autumn is filled with a lot of things: apple picking, the return of your favorite shows and, of course, the start of comfort food season. This year, it’s time to switch things up. Instead of the same boring soups and stews, we’re bringing you some cultural inspiration … some of which is still soups and stews. After some intense research (googling) we’ve found seven amazing recipes from every corner of the world. 

So, sit down or, if you’re reading this on your phone, lean against a nearby wall, and get ready to be inspired to make some new stuff. 

1) Ireland: Parsnip soup

If you like carrots and potatoes, you’ll love parsnips. These root vegetables look like white carrots but have a sweeter taste and “unique” smell, which people seem to either love or hate.
Smell aside, this hearty tuber is perfectly utilized in Ireland’s popular parsnip soup. This recipe pairs parsnips with apples, bringing double the fall flavor.

2) India: Sweet carrot pudding (Gajar ka halwa)

The sweet dish can trace its roots to 3000 BC. If it’s stuck around for that long, there’s a good chance it’s delicious.

3) Austria: Apple strudel (Apfelstrudel)

Apple strudel is the national dish of Austria. The Vienna Library in City Hall even contains a hand-written apple strudel recipe from 1697. Austrians take this dish seriously. 

And, for good reason. Sweet, spiced apples are nestled within warm, flaky pastry. It’s a national treasure and must be tasted at all costs. For an extra treat, serve this up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

4) Argentina: Beef stew in a pumpkin (Carbonada al zapallo) 

Though this is known a winter dish, it’s stew made in a pumpkin, so it’s definitely appropriate for fall. The traditional way to make this recipe is wild. You dig a hole, put hot coals in it, place the pumpkin filled with soup into it, cover the entire thing with dirt, wait six hours, and finally you unearth the thing and eat it. 

This version is pretty boring compared to that, but it still seems delicious. It’s also a little easier.

5) Japan: Pumpkin croquettes (kabocha korokke) 

There are a variety of korokke available in Japan, but the best type is filled with pumpkin. These sweet and savory fried balls are a perfect treat on a cold day.

6) Canada: Bannock 

This recipe originated in Scotland, but was adopted by the Métis, an indigenous people from Western Canada. The bread is a quick and filling treat which makes it perfect for camping.

7) Lesotho: Cinnamon rolls (Makoenya)  

Lesotho is a country within a country. This small nation is located inside of South Africa and is a high-altitude home to some very tasty dishes, including cinnamon rolls. These aren’t like typical cinnamon rolls, they’re more similar to elephant ears.

These recipes should keep you going until winter arrives.
