The Adventure Team Hikes The Grand Canyon

Mar 20, 2020

Seven Corners Adventure Team member and co-founder of Seven Corners, Jim Krampen and his family, took a trip to Arizona. They had hiking adventures all over the Grand Canyon as well as the nearby Antelope Canyon. Read on for Jim's Story...

First, we took on hiking Horeshoe Bend. The young man in the picture is my nephew Josh Flamme.

I'm the idiot with my hands raised, standing close to the edge and a 5,000 foot plunge to my death, with my wife taking the picture and yelling at me to move away from the edge, or, she wouldn't take the picture. There were people there sitting on the edge with their feet dangling over it!

These were taken at the South Kaibab Trail at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, with me, Josh, his girlfriend Kaylee Slausion, my wife Linda and my daughter Karis. We hiked from the South Kaibab Trail head to Skeleton Point, which has a view of the Colorado River. The hike was 6 miles round trip and a 2,000 foot elevation change from the top of the trail head to Skeleton Point. Total hike time was 4.5 hours. It was a relatively easy trail hike with perfect weather, sunny and clear blue sky.

45 degrees at the top at 8:30am and 80 degrees at Skeleton Point and a perfect 75 degrees when we got back to the top at 1:00pm. The sunlight hitting the canyon walls at different times of the day almost make you feel like you are hiking a different part of the canyon on your way back up, because the color and shade make the canyon walls seem different than they were in the morning.

An elk came up to drink from the only fresh water filling station at the trail head, right by where we were hiking. Being a few feet away from a several hundred pound wild animal and having my back to it for the picture was probably not the smartest thing I've ever done, but I lived to tell about it!

Finally, we visited Antelope Canyon, which is not in the Grand Canyon. Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon on Navajo land in Arizona. Antelope Canyon has two separate slot canyon sections, known as "Upper Antelope Canyon" or "The Crack"; and "Antelope Canyon" or "The Corkscrew".
