Does My Health Insurance Follow Me When I Travel?

Asking if your health insurance follows you abroad is an important consideration for any trip, but unfortunately there's no easy answer to this question.

You may be thinking, I have health insurance in the United States. Won't it cover me abroad?

To be sure, you need to read your policy, specifically the exclusions, to see if care outside the U.S. is excluded. If you have coverage outside the U.S., check to see what type of care is covered. Often, it's only emergencies.

What About Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicaid does not cover you outside the U.S. and most Medicare plans also do not cover you outside the U.S., although some provide emergency care in Canada and Mexico. To learn more, visit Medicare.gov or check with your Medicare supplement provider.

What about countries with national health care systems?

These countries provide care for their citizens and residents, and the coverage is not intended for tourists who are visiting for a brief period of time.

How is medical care covered overseas?

Foreign medical providers may require you to pay upfront for their services before they treat you. This could mean putting a large medical expense on your credit card, can you afford to do this? Well, there’s good news- there’s an inexpensive solution that’s easy. Travel insurance. You won’t have to worry about whether you’re covered if you buy a travel insurance plan.

For a small price you can feel safe and secure when you travel. Seven Corners offers international travel medical plans that protect you when you travel outside your home country. You receive medical coverage, an extensive network of worldwide healthcare providers, and 24-hour multilingual travel assistance.
