4 Ways Travel Makes You Younger (Really!)

It is often said age just a number. But what does that number mean?

In a study called “Marketing to Seniors: Age Really is a State of Mind,” researchers found age isn’t just a number: it’s also a state of mind. They discovered  that seniors  who were psychologically younger had more positive attitudes toward life satisfaction and aging than their cognitively older counterparts.

As the study states, “Most believe they see the world as it is, but really, we see it as we are.” Even though age is “just a number,” how old you feel depends more on how you live and view the world.

The empowering news is that while genes play a role, your behavior, outlook and lifestyle play a larger role in determining your “true” age.

In a sense, age is a choice people make. And while a lot goes into staying younger within, travel is a lifestyle choice that can rewind your cognitive age clock.

1. Travel Increases Appreciation of What We Have

Your perspective affects how old you feel. In the study cited above, researchers found that feeling content with what you have correlates to higher rating of life satisfaction. Travel often makes us grateful for what we have by showing us how little much of the world has.

As travel writer Bruce Northam says, “There’s no doubt traveling has kept my youthful spirit alive. It’s shown me that regardless of where you’re from, odds are we share the same goals — to be useful to ourselves and our families.

2. Travel Takes You Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Getting out of your comfort zone can be a challenge, and overcoming those challenges is like taking your brain to a cognitive boot camp!

Being an older or senior traveler often means you can afford to go to that all-inclusive resort, but it doesn’t mean  that’s your only option. There are many other unique ways to experience your destination — if you’re planning on something particularly adventurous, just make sure to pack your travel insurance.

3. Traveling is a Great Way to Stay Fit

It’s no secret that getting regular exercise is important to keeping your body fit and feeling young. Traveling is filled with opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring in ways that will have you logging  record daily steps on your Fitbit.

Of course, you don’t need to travel to do any of these things. But the break in routine travel gives you is an opportunity to get out and be active instead being stuck in an endless cycle of sameness.
